as the subject says, under $400. I'm looking for a tube combo that is reasonably loud and has good mids.

I have no affiliation with any of these:

I know only one of these is under 400, but you can most likely talk people down.

You should look for a fender excelsior. I really dig this amp.

I think they have both an excelsior and an ac-15 in my local guitar center so I'll try them out.

paid 400 for my silvertone 1483 thing sounds awesome. pretty sure you could find a 1482 in the -400 range.
good volume, good cleans, good tube breakup.
if you could find a deal I'd go for one of them.

Not too long ago musicians friend and guitar center were clearing out some nice ampegs in this price range. Too bad

$400 is good enough to get you a proper tube amp if you look in the right places. I paid $500 for both my '70 Fender Twin and my '65 Epiphone Futura RVT.

A far more practical and readily available solution would be a used Peavey classic 30 or Crate Vintage Club.

Aren't peaveys hated on here or something?

lot of people here love peavey

also the classic 30 is a real top contender for a cheap 1x12 tube combo. depends what you're after

I hate the Peavey Bandit. Fuck that guy.

Their tube amps aren't bad though.

I'm biased because I use one every day, but the silver face Musicmaster Bass amp is an excellent sounding, highly portable 1x12" guitar amp. There aren't many vintage Fender amps within your budget, but this one is.

That is a nice amp, however at 5 watts you'll never be able to play in a band with it unless you mic your amp.

I'll have to try all of these out.

It's 12 watts. Fit a decent speaker and it's easily loud enough for most situations.

Wait, sorry, there are 2 versions, but you're right, 12 watts for both.

Another vote for a Musicmaster bass amp. Great amps.

How much does the Laney VC-15 go for in your neck of the woods? I love mine.

I've had a Musicmaster Bas amp since the mid-90s. It's never let me down. Sounds great on its own for recording and small shows, mics well for large shows. I have the later version with the on/off switch.

I dont know the exact model numbers, but Ampeg has recently released these guitar all tube combo amps that are really pretty great for the cash, id certainly recommend one of those if you run into one. I've seen them at sam ash, but not guitar center.
