amp head problem/question

Post by Mattsican »

I got a Peavey Valveking micro maybe three weeks ago brand new. Ive used it two or three times in a live band situation thru a mesa 4x12 cab. The other times ive used it were at home at a low volume thru a ampeg 1x15 bass cab. Both cabs are 8ohm cabs. Last time i used it was on the 4x12 and i had it cranked pretty good and it held up great. I turned it off, packed it up and brought it home and it sat ever since. Yesterday i go to hook it up to the 1x15 cab and everything comes on except no sound. I tried a different speaker cable, guitar cables, everything. I had a headphone jack with a speaker defeat button and it sound fine thru the headphones and the DI. Then i realized if i put the gain and volumes to the max setting i can hear a faint guitar sound coming out of the cab. at first i thought it was a tube issue, but it sounds fine thru the headphone/DI jacks. I've not been able to test it on another cab yet but i dont think the low volume would have damaged my bass cab with the guitar at all. Teh thoughtz?

Put an Orange sticker on it, paint the sides, send it off and tell them it's under warranty?

possibly at the power stage, which is bypassed by the headphone jack.

When you press the accelerator past halfway it doesn’t actually go any faster, but the engine noise distorts

Sounds like the power tubes have shit the bed. The tiny guitar sound you hear could be just what the preamp stage is able to come up with?

It has two JJ el34s in it. They should be pretty brand new.
They both light up the same as before. I pulled them put and reseated them to make sure they were in right.

Power tubes can still light up and be blown. Do you have any other known working pair you can substitute?

I do now.. just ordered a matched pair to replace them with. I've a set of 6 12ax7s already that came out of my friends 6505+. I'll swap them all if needed and if I'm still having probs I'm sending this tiny bitch back to Peavey.

so come to find out back when my band mate knocked over and broke my Orange bass head the resulting power explosion blew my speaker in my cab. Fan fucking tastic. at least my heads are good and i'm only out a $300 cab. Still not super stoked though. He offered up some cash to replace the speaker. Problem is i almost think the cab is sealed. I dont see anyway to really open it up an replace the speaker. Ampeg B115e. At least it wasnt my expensive 410HE.

it may be front loaded, so you take off the grille and remove the speaker there.

Aren't all cabs front-loading? Given that the speaker has to slot-into the baffle?

nah, lots of 4x12s and stuff are rear-loaded and the speakers screw in from the back.

Looks like the speaker cloth is on a frame.

Maybe the piping holds the front frame in?

Well played. So that seems simple enough. My buddy says I should just get it reconed. I'm thinkin it may be an excuse to get a better speaker for it. I saw an eminence replacement for about $125. Anyone got a better idea for a good replacement? I got an orange terror bass 500 head .
