Eminence Lil' Texas

Post by Gabriel »

Just fitted one of these to my Rivera Chubster 55. I wanted a neo speaker as I needed to make my amp lighter, I don't drive so I carry my amp on a trolley to gigs - I was using an EV speaker that while sounded amazing, made the amp unbearably heavy.

So enter the Eminence Lil Texas.

First impressions must take into account that the speaker isn't broken in yet. The construction doesn't seem as tough, but then again EV's are built like tanks. But fitting the speaker was pretty easy, the screw holes are very slightly closer together meaning that I'm only using 3 screws, but the speaker is pretty secure so I'm not too worried about that.

Tone-wise the speaker is a little darker and has a bit more mid-range emphasis than the EV. This translates nicely as the tone I had dialled in before as I had the mid cranked on the amp already. Also the voicing of this speaker is much more suited to the drive channel of my Rivera, it has tamed a bit of the spikiness and added a bit more girth to the sound.

Would definitely recommend this speaker.

Also I used one of these cables to attach the speaker. Was very easy to do and saved me having to do any soldering. It's nice having a sturdier speaker cable in the amp as well.

Oooh...interesting. I'm still planning on a speaker swap for my DRRI, and an Eminence would be an affordable solution. Glad to hear it's worked out for you.

The speaker connector plug is a neat idea too. The plug that was supplied with my amp to connect the stock speaker is, to put it bluntly, a bit crap. The thought of an unreliable connection that's dealing with potentially transformer-busting levels doesn't reassure me, so I'l be bookmarking that for sure!

Coooooolness, does the neo speaker make a big difference overall weightwise? I'm planning on doing the same thing with a 1x12 cab to get as light a rig as possible for dragging across London.

It's made it alot lighter than when it was fitted with the EV speaker, but that thing is HUGE. Can't remember how heavy it was with the old celestion in it but I'm sure it's a fair bit lighter than that too.
