Alas, my first vintage guitar. The offset to rule them all, the one that got me into offsets (basically anything not Strat or Les Paul) in the first place years ago. Funny thing is I never even got around to buying a Mustang until after I got a Jaguar and Jazzmaster (reissues, at that).

Came across a good deal and picked this 1966 Daphne Blue Fender Mustang up today - it looks like pickups might be original, I need to check. Paid $829 (plus tax :fp: , but free strings ;D )

The finish on the body is original, I looked inside the control cavity and it's A-ok, there's some humming in the guitar and the switches need some extra cleaning but everything seems to function well. Fret life is pretty bad, so it'll need a refret at some point, but considering how low they are, the guitar is still set up very well on some new 11's.

Missing the original trem arm, and the tuners are sadly not original (I really don't like the chromed out look on this guitar), but trying to figure out what to do next. The guitar is in pretty good shape, some very evident checking and yellowing (body and pickguard), but it's very subtle and fairly nice.

I agree regarding the tuners. Maybe start by finding a set of nice white Klusons?

If you want repro style tuning machines (Kluson style with white plastic buttons) these are about $20. I have them on my DuoSonic and am happy with them:

Gorgeous lacquer checking. Displayed nicely with some excellent photography (guess that's where the name comes from).

That seems like an amazing price for a vintage Mustang? In the UK, that would be at least double what you paid. In some places more like triple.

I saw the tuners you guys posted, but I have a feeling I'll need a bushing, I'm assuming the previous owner had them drilled out a bit, also the in-line tuners look great, but I think I need the slanted "F-style" ones, any idea which ones are period correct?

Wow! That's crazy. My '65 is in the same condition minus the the aged paint mark with those exact same schaller tuners! Haha. Except mine is dakota red. Hit me up if you wanna trade. I love the daphne.

I'm stunned by the state of the metalwork; it looks pretty much as new; my Swinger ('69) has rust spots that were there when I bought it when it was about 7 years old

You are correct..... the factory fitted F tuners with plastic buttons on your Mustang in 1966.
