Barber Electronics, boutique done FUCKING well.

Hey guys,
I have a love hate relationship with boutique gear. For every company like Devi Ever who deliver solid performance and innovation at a reasonable price tag there seems to be company like JHS who do things just a little bit fucked.
Barber electronics though have really blown my little mind with my most recent purchase of their Gain Changer overdrive pedal.

$139 for a killer sounding overdrive pedal with more functionality than most overdrives I've had the pleasure of using. Really shoves it in the face of those select few builders who charge $220 for Klon clones and TS knock offs with a slightly different output cap.

Dude I'm right here.

Most Devi Ever FX customer service issues have been of the "I don't like it/I don't know how to use it/I broke it" type. There are a LOT of one trick ponies in the stable, but that comes hand in hand with the price point.

I was referring to the pre-Dwarfcraft pedals. But those gutshots don't lie.

Is this as good as the Freekish Blues series, though?

In fact, is anything as good as the Freekish Blues series?

But yeah, I get why people have a problem with Devi Ever but the pedals always seemed perfectly fine at doing what they were meant to do. Lets forget all the Devi hate and focus on the real enemy: Offsetguitars.

Look, let's all just come to the decision that Freekish Blues is the best.
Ever.

As unprofessional as this sounds of me as a reviewer, I cannot for the life of me find the source of the Devi Ever hate. Can someone link me up or briefly explain it to me?

I was basing my judgement of Devi Ever off personal experience. I had a Soda Meiser and a Ruby and they were both great, usable pedals. I wasn't into reviewing back then and didn't really know anything about the industry. It was poor form of me to not do background research.

I don't think there's any need for the Devi Ever hate.

The products are great, although admittedly I can't speak for quality control as I've only ever owned one. Devi herself has been a bit of a shady character on a few occasions in the past, but now that she's no longer really involved and Aen is at the helm I can't see why anyone would have anything but good things to say!

Not hating on Devi*, but nice to own something where it looks like someone's at least tried to put it together nicely.

* apart from the fact that she ripped off loads of people with her kickstarter, obv.

Just read her notes on the failed kick starter project.
Damn.

Circuit boards used to be wrapped up in electrical tape.

Well fuck...
Now I see what Benecol means.

Has that improved since Dwarfcraft took over?

Do you have any Greek ones currently in?

I digress.

Yes, I agree with OP. Barber is very good stuff and decently priced. I saw their website recently though and they seem to have stripped their prodict line right down.

In relation to Barber, I feel likewise about MI Audio, EQD and Voodoo Lab.

In theory, Barber have eliminated the need for the other LTD drives with the creation of The Gain Changer and in the same method, made the other Direct Drive models obsolete by combining them all into single pedals.

I can understand why people would want the single versions to keep from over complicating things though. It's all well and good to have that many sounds in the one pedal but I understand that people would desire the need to swap between the different sounds like the low and high gain of the Gain Changer on the fly.

Either way, still the best overdrive I've picked up in a long time.
