cost of amp repair?

Post by luciguci »

i was wondering, how much should i cost to get a tube amp repaired, because im trying to sell my kustom defender 15 to my uncle to give to my second cousin since he just got an electric guitar after playing classical for a year (the kid is pretty good too, im impressed honestly).

anyways he was either looking at getting a peavey 6505 for him, but i was like dude no thats 60 watts of nope, give him a low watt amp that wont piss the neighbors off as much. so, im offering him my kustom for $200 plus amp repair but he wants to know how much it'll cost him to get it fixed. now, im pretty sure it shouldnt cost too much since im positive its just the power tubes that need replacing, but i still need like an estimate of how much that should cost.

does the amp not work at all? if you take it to a tech they will at least tell you what is up with it, because it may not be the tubes(!).

if it is the tubes, the thing you may need a tech for is to rebias them (control how hot they will be running), but tbh the amp will likely not have been rebiased at all since new. if thats the case i wouldn't worry about slotting some new ones in yourself as all amps new off the shelf are biased cold to increase tube life and reduce the risk of failing. putting in anything generic would be fine; he's not gonna care.

potentially an hour's work and some tubes could set you back a fair bit - honestly couldn't say in the US. £25 an hour and maybe £30 for a cheap matched set of tubes over here in blighty.

What did the guitar tech say last year? Is it the same problem?

Honestly it could cost over $100 to fix with parts and labor. You should just get it fixed and then tell your uncle how much it was. If your uncle thinks it's too much, sell it on CL.

There's a guy right in Venice that repairs amps. But a Kustom? Hell, it'll cost more to fix it than what it's worth..
