Fender Supersonic First Impressions

I just got my Fender Pawn Shop Supersonic (in gunmetal grey) in today. I snagged it for $350 on musiciansfriend when they were having the sale. Overall, this is an outstanding guitar. The neck is a little beefy, but everything feels very sturdy and solid. The pickups are going to have to go, as I was not a fan of the Atomics. Ordered a custom pickguard at wdmusic and a JB/Jazz humbucker set and will dropping them in the guitar soon. The action is a little off, but I have not set it up or intonated it. Also, it is WAY more purple than pictures had shown me. I love it, though and am ready to get it set up to my tastes. Roughly $500 + cost of setup and this will be an upgraded and brand new fender. Great deal. I'll post pics when I finish with it.

An update on the color: I noticed it looks very different depending on the lighting. In a normal, well lit room, the purple shines through. When it's a little darker or the lights are off (but sunlight coming in) it looks dark grey. When I take pictures of it with the flash on, it looks like black sparkle and without flash, purple sparkle. The paint makes me think of outer space, so that is really cool. It's a very far out guitar.

Very excited for you!

Fun project idea: maybe try to set up the guitar yourself? I taught myself just by reading forums. You save some money, learn more about guitars, and get it set up just how you like.

I've always wanted to learn how (and probably should), but I have had this one tech at a local music store set up every guitar I've ever had since I started playing. He always does an outstanding job, and I like to think of letting him do it for me as my way of contributing to the only local music store in town. I rarely shop there except for the occasional pack of strings and a few picks.

This was me for a very long time.

This is me now. I still feel a little guilty about not taking my guitars in to my tech as much as I used to, but when you've got like five guitars to set up, that shit gets expensive fast. And honestly, a good tech will be rooting for you if you get the itch to start doing the work yourself. I still go to mine for advice and for stuff I don't have the tools or the know-how to attempt myself, and buy whatever I can there.

I love how all the vista scumbag finishes have aged over the years. Makes me want one even more now.

I picked up my orange and red ones on Saturday. Sent the red one to be converted to a 12-string. The orange one came home. Definitely needs a set-up, but I like doing this myself, so that will be next weekend's project.
