I seriously considered this (and the strat jack Jazzmaster) before the Vintage Modified models came out. I'll pass now, though a part of me wants to get it to have something like a Jagmaster around.

I bought one of these for $300 when they came out, with no regrets. I had meant to chop it up and make a shortscale Tele-Esquire-Jaguar out of it, but once I got it I loved the pickups, and nothing was wrong with it, so it has remained stock for over three years. If I didn't already have one, I'd buy this in a second. Sustains for days, for some reason.
Japan actually got different colours for this model, IIRC. White and CAR, I think. A white one would be nice.

I kind of do actually but I don't need any more guitars. Don't know how some of you can stand having 30 of these things.
$170 is a really good deal. If it had smaller fretwire I'd buy it for the neck and sell the loaded body.

I tried to love these but couldn't. But for $169 it's totally worth it just for the parts. Good project guitar too.

ugly as hell, i'd just spend the extra skrilla on the VM jags that look like actual jags, get that SEAFOAM GREEN TOO.

I played one and it wasn't all that bad.
It's just irredeemably ugly.
Maybe if it was was given a black refin and a black pickguard but meh. Not worth time and money.

I reached this conclusion recently after a few resurrected Epis/Gibbo-style kits/partscasters left me up to my nose in buckers, TOMs, nut blanks, ugly tort sheets I don't even like... I haven't really reached a conclusion yet actually, I bought an SG to "get rid of parts", which is arguably a bigger problem. I have one:
I love it. It's a great guitar. Well built, and the stock pickups are fantastic. Really the only thing wrong is that Squier made it fugly. Fiesta red is a nice colour, but adding cheap printed tort plus zebra coil pickups turns it into a massive clusterfuck of clashing visual noise. I de-uglified mine by adding a black pickguard, pickup rings, and metal covers over the stock pickups. I think I made it pretty, and these were cheap and easy upgrades to doa. And I like the bridge. It is super adjustable and rock solid. Plus it looks less "Gibsonized" than having a TOM bridge like so many other humbuckered Fenders.
Squier needs to stop using the printed tort. I know that the decent stuff is too expensive for budget guitars, but Squier should just stick to solid colours. Using the crappy printed tort just ends up making an otherwise great guitar look cheap.
