This just fell out of my Strat

I've a feeling that it came out of where the
reverb handle goes but I'm not sure. It's very stiff, as in not very springy, and I don't recognise it from taking a guitar, specifically a Strat apart.

I've seen them used to keep some preload on the trem arm, could be from that.

Yep they are designed to stop the trem arm being floppy when you screw it in.

What kind of Strat? Can't imagine there being a spring in the socket where the arm screws in...but some of the pop-in arms have a screw to adjust how tight the the arm is in the socket, i.e. whether it just spins around or if it's held in place. And I think they are spring loaded. Never seen that with a screw-in arm, since theoretically you should be able to just screw the arm in more if you want to keep it from spinning, but you never know.

I suppose it's so there's less chance of fucking up the thread? So I can just drop it back in when I screw the arm back in?

Yes, I don't know when it became standard but it's supposed to load up the arm to stop it flopping. When you buy the guitar there's a little sticker over the hole. I took mine out and put it in a bag for safe keeping. The guy in Guitar Village said if you lose it you can use an eraser from one of those plastic propelling pencils.

Naw, it's mojo. Tone is in the fingers. Lose your reverb handle and you will lose all your mojo, loose your fingers and you will lose all the tone. But an tone makes no sense without an mojo and vice versa. So keep dam both.

Aye, my secret weapon those springs - I love them. They sit under the reverb handle, so you can tension it how you like it, and find the handle where you leave it (unless you like it floppy). If you're not using it, bag it up (and shame on you for missing half the fun of the strat). If you are using it, dip it in vaseline before dropping it back in - stops it seizing in the threads, and also tacks it in so it doesn't fall out.

When I were a lad, we didn't have fancy things like
springs. Kids today, they don't know what it's like to find you've accidentally caught your Strat-o-caster's reverb handle on your jack plug and put the whole guitar out of tune in the middle of a song.
