Harmony H54/1

Post by Zack »

Hey shortscale, I've been thinking about getting a Harmony H54/1 for a good couple years now. My original plan was to sell off a good amount of solid bodies that have found their way into my collection and haven't been getting much use, but a good deal showed up and I went for it:

To my knowledge pretty much all of it is stock aside from one of the knobs. I'm pretty surprised that the plastic is still so white, so I assume some of it is repro but I can't be sure. It's in pretty excellent condition too, aside from a few blemishes due to its age. There's also this weird perfect circle behind the neck, seller mentioned that there might have been a sticker on the back at some point, but it looks carved into the finish. What do y'all think?

I'm so stoked about it, I've never had a hollow body electric before and I'm pleased this is the first. Figured if I'm gonna continue to collect way too many guitars I better get some variants. I'm sorta missing using a tremolo since I've been using the brostang almost exclusively, but the harmony I played with a trem on it was pretty lackluster compared to a mustang trem. I've yet to try the gold foils with any pedals but man they sounded pretty sweet through my silvertone combo.

Beautiful guitar. More full sized photos please.
About the circle, just some absurd idea, maybe it had a strap button glued there

Sorry about the wait, I was gonna post these photos a few days ago but I recorded a lackluster demo and figured I'd lump sum 'em all in one post.

Some more pix:

So the guitar has an acoustic styled end pin, I'm debating on getting a dowel and using some metal ones. Either way I've got to get some rubber washers. Still not sure about the circle on the heel, it's about the size of a coin so and looks like the same paint, I don't think there was a strap pin there, if there was they did a great job of hiding it just to draw attention with the circle. I'm thinking maybe there was some ornament fixed onto it, but the carve isn't deep to really justify that. Also, the guitar is a hollow body. There is a small piece of wood being used as bracing between the back and front where the bridge goes, but no semi-hollow wings.

I'm not really used to doing demos and I have a stupidly complicated way of getting that microphone to my computer, so I hope it worked out ok. In hindsight I should have changed the strings before I recorded all this and the previous takes, there are a couple moments where it might go out of tune slightly. Mostly human error.

Indeed some lovely tones. You have a perfect match there - Silvertone amp with your Harmony
