So what is the difference. Im leaning towards staytrem because it is cheaper, but will the smaller string spacing put the strings off of the pole pieces.

Staytrem, mastery is expensive and still sinks down when played as mentioned by several accounts on offset.

What about the string spacing though?

They still seem to line up to me

I prefer the string spacing on my Staytrem compared to the modified mustang bridge on my JM Jag. You obviously can't adjust the string spacing as you can with a regular Jazzmaster/Jaguar bridge but they both line up okay with the pole pieces. It's not something I would worry about and the Staytrem bridge is a great piece of kit. They do a non-rocking version now as well if that's your thing.
I've not tried a Mastery but lots of people rave about them. Aside from the cost, I've been a bit put off by the aesthetics (yes, I know that's shallow) and the fact that I tend to use a wound G (some people have reported issues getting Masterys to intonate with these). If neither of those things bother you then, based on teh internet opinion, I doubt you'd be disappointed with one. Pretty sure there are a few people on here that have them so hopefully they can give you the low down.

Polepieces aren't individual close-mics on each string, strings lining up perfectly with them totally doesn't matter that much. The strings will probably still be over their respective poles even if they aren't centered on each one, which is fine.

STOCK BRIDGE

Here's the photo of my VM JM with Staytrem. The strings line up pretty closely. They could prolly line up even better if I fiddled with the pickup height a bit more. As Paul said, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference.

Stock bridge was just fine on my AVRI Jag, but the Squier bridge is a different beast. I had screws rattling loose almost immediately... I lost a grub screw during my second practice with the guitar. Really crazy as I am not heavy handed at all. Also, the sinking bridge issue was horrific. I tinkered with the stock bridge for 2 years and made it work during that time... But I wish I had just bought a Staytrem or Mustang bridge earlier.

The Mastery is great, better than the Staytrem IMO, and I have both. I'm not convinced it is more than twice the price better.
And sorry Rob, both are a fuck site better than the stock bridge, especially a VM one. The AVRI/vintage one only works if you use massive strings like you do.

Hmmm the Staytrem does look like a nice piece of engineering. Not like that Mastery monstrosity. I will buy an AVRI Jag this year, so might entertain a bridge upgrade.

I have a Staytrem.
I spent a couple years with a Jazzmaster bridge & a tube of locktite then several more years with a Mustang bridge but the Staytrem works best for me, no issues. Just drop it in & forget about it. Never tried a Mastery & don't feel the need.

Yeah, I was able to set up my VM Jag just fine with the stock bridge. For some reason the stock bridge on my VM Jazz was giving me tons of problems. I spent hours upon hours messing with it. I finally got a StayTrem 2 years later and it is just a fantastic product.

I feel like the effort required to earn $100 for the staytrem is less than the effort required to fix that bridge.
