New boring ass Fender basses

Fender have been doing some stellar demos of their new bass offerings.
Check out the new line of drab active Deluxe series basses. All the personality and sex appeal of a sodden paper bag, with a range of 4 and 5 string Jazz and Precision models that sound utterly identical...

And the Standard Jaguar Bass

Borrows from some of the success of the Squier Jaguar bass while removing the more interesting aspects of its tone circuit, ignoring the shortscale option, and jacking up the price.

They chose to demo these things with the most lifeless tone and playing... it really turns me off of the instruments more than if they'd been better demoed. They're generally bad, no-risk model "innovations", but that playing/tone is just painful.

Bass demos always suck. It's like, just play a short variety of recognizable riffs with the gear with different tonal settings that compliment the song. Not that hard.

Do more than slap, or short sticcato weedily bits.

I swear I saw a seemingly serious demo for a bass amp where the guy used a fuzz pedal the whole time because he liked the way it sounded. Nobody could tell what the amp actually sounded like unless they planned to use that fuzz with it, which happened to sound like garbage to my ears.

The playing is what's boring. I really like the look of the Jag bass because of the scale length and jazz/precision pickup combination though.

Except they'll never make a left-handed version.

EDIT: WTF about the scale length? Isn't that the whole point of it being a Jag bass? Or is it some weird in-between scale length?

They're all 34" aren't they, except for the Squier SS one (30") and that Pawn Shop one (32")?

Jag bass has always been a funny shaped jazz bass until squier made a short scale version

Yeah, only the Squier SS was shortscale, and the PS was a medium scale; all other iterations of the Squier and Fender Jaguar have been 34"... something that annoys me greatly.
This Fender Standard really is just a Squier SS model with a full scale neck... same pickup config, same look, same controls... without the benefit of shortscale and Squier pricing. It just falls flat since it's already available from Squier, pretty much.

The original Deluxe version of the Fender Jaguar Bass at least had good Jaguar styling with the switching and plates. I didn't really dig the active circuit or the 34" scale, but it looked right.

I dunno, it does seem like lame-o mode is slowly eclipsing Fender's marketing team; if coffee tables are this year's theme it would be by far more interesting to just import Fender Japan trans-finished basses, including the oddball basswood Aerodynes.

► Show Spoiler

If I needed to have much of what the ugly clearcoat 2015 Active Deluxe models come with, I'd rather wait for a used Dame Sanctus M400 to pop up here in the local market. They're no longer made, but can still be had for around $250 when they do rear their funky headstocks. Ugly quilted maple top on mahogany with all the gaudy trimmings, and a very nice and meaty Gary Snyder-designed active system that actually sounds very good. It's a real sleeper among non-export MIKs.

As do I, though I imagine 12 lbs of thumpy love slung over my shoulder would be hard to deal with at this age.
