played this at guitar center as i'd been real curious about them since i saw this video:

like the guy said it was soooo fucking heavy but the neck was astonishingly good (chunky) and the pups had been replaced with what looked like unbranded passive emg types and sounded really good-- had one loose pot and the tuners were a bit suspect but jesus it sounded so good

The one you saw is not the same as the one in the video, the one in the video has a bigger body and a slightly better positioned strap button.

Nah it was too high up on the wall for me to reach. I did try that ss tele thing and it sounded great. It mightve just been the realy nice orange amp I was playing on though. I wasnt used to its setup though with the 9s and I kept bending a shitton even with just chords because ive been playing on a jazzmaster with am 11 set with a 13 guage high e and high action.

Those look too small or something. Is the body scaled down compared to a normal V?

Yes.

Maybe if they were full size they would be too heavy for a human to play

there are ways to do it: thinner body or chambering.
I always liked the smoked plexiglass, not very popular, I think only Ampeg/Dan Armstrong made these:
Chinese strats (not sure if second is Chinese but probably):
the second could be orange like the first, the lighting being different.
