Any differences in materials besides the aesthetics? How do I know which years use which wood? I'm looking to get a mid 60s model and don't know which to pick.

Would you guys say the mahagony bodies are more coveted?

Probably Mustang, because it's the only one available in the two styles.

Luckily you don't have to make a choice because the mid-60s only came in slab, contour came in the late 60s.

Mahogany extremely rare in Mustangs and only available in slab. Most slab are poplar. Contour are usually ash.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Musicmasters were only slab, but Jaguars were only contoured. Mustang for sure.

Mustang. My bad.

Is the hardware, neck (fret board) and electronics similar across the slab and contour models?

Best bang for your buck is an early 70s. I used to prefer slab to contour, tho at the time my only contour mustang was a Japanese reissue which was far too heavy, especially for the body size. These days I'll tend to pick up a contoured early 70s contoured Mustang before my slab 65. Comfier AND the perfect weight.

are you talking about the comfort cutouts? (contour)

70's/late60z mustangs had comfort, early are slab/flat.

i like and have both.

i have a 65 that i love, and I made a new body and i went for the non comfort cutouts... I dig the early 60's style.

gotta admit, i'll take the beveled edges over the slap any day.
