What pedal do I need to get this type of distortion?

Don't know, but the distortion is on the bass.

And the guitar. Before the bass starts.

Love them sounds too, man; a real 'overloaded' kind fuzz, these guys wanna know too:

I immediately thought of that Supro/Valco amp-style pedal that Freethenoise demo'd:

I've similar luck stacking pedals, mid gain into low gain can make for some fun squashies.

Thank you Doog. Freethenoise's review gives some food for thought

If it's for recording purposes, I've got a similar sound puting a Big Muff into my Orange micro crush and over loading it to where it sounds like it's going to explode... Sounds like there some tape saturation on the whole mix on the song you posted

I'm asking more for the live purpose, and still I agree that small wattage amp could be better for that purpose - it will be extremelly distorted, but not that loud to make listeners' ears bleeding. I gotta check different reviews of Big Muff and King of Tone

LIttle Big Muff driving a small amp is one way to get similar sounds, based on some of the bands I've seen in the day that influenced the creation of the comic ;)

For anyone not in the know, Beck did the Sex Bob-bomb musics for the film

I think a Boss DS-1 will do fine to get this type of sound. This sound is clearly a distortion sound but it is pretty close to an overdrive. I think extreme distortions are too heavy and snarling to get this sound.

Meta game? 15 posts isn't bad, what do I win?

That's what I'm using the Ghetto Stomp for. I usually gig with a 40 watt Hiwatt or 30 watt Fender style combo. The Ghetto Stomp does a really good job of making them sound like tiny pieces of shit (in a really nice way)

Thanks for the share Doog!

Sounds a lot like a Smokey Amp to me.

We'll played, we've got a clear-cut case study here with possibly enough past experience to warrant some kind of formal statement on the meta matter :D

Even moreso here, I think it probably is actually an extremely distorted acoustic guitar (like homeboy is using in the film):

Some thing about the attack and resonance makes me think it totally is. To be honest, I would try using an EQ before a ratty overdrive to really push the woofy lows and nasty highs, I feel like having a bash at recreating it myself later tonight

Sounds to me like he's down-tuned light strings (probably 7s or 8s) to get that floppiness, the way the tuning dips when the string is hit.

I don't know if Becks usual band played on this, if they did the guitar player usually uses a Fuzz Factory and an old Boss multi-fx as can be heard on Pressure Zone from Midnite Vultures. If you stuck an acoustic into that sort ovf pedal you'd get a good approximation.
