Hi all,
New to the forum. I go by howdo because some peeps once noticed I seem to say "how do" much more often than "Hello, how are you".
I get paid to play drums, but I also started learning guitar really early on. So guitar (as a player) is a hobby thing for me. Collecting, and a serious respect for all things "vintage", is where I am coming from on my latest project.
No photos yet, some parts are in transit, etc.
Currently I have a Mustang neck 24" 8Nov1965B, large peghead, trans logo, slab rw...and a 1974 Daphne blue MM body.
I have found a parts dealer to do some trading with. Trading my MM body for a Mustang body from early 66.
Got most of the parts and electronics sorted. Having a hard time finding just the bridge...an original anyways.
Very excited about this guitar. It's only my second salvage.
My first was a 1964 Daphne Musicmaster24" that I found in an antique store 15 years ago.

Hey, welcome howdo. Not much advice on Mustangs, sorry, nearest I come is that I have a '66 A shortscale Mustang neck that someone cut the scroll off and attached to a butchered Bass V body, called the resultant lash-up a Swinger.

Far as I know it should have plastic buttons. Sort of a hexagon shape, right?
The ones on my neck are cheapies...no single line name, let alone a double line name.lol
The neck came to me with them on it.
I'll replace them eventually. Most likely small round plastic button Klusons. Not a big fan of the "F" tuner.
The Daphne body is gone...she's packed away in a box and enroute to upstate New York.
Coming back my way, over the next week or so:
1966 Black refin' (done in 70's was white orig)Mustang body w/ orig tort guard, pots, and wiring, etc.
And it's original neck plate.
No pickups, no bridge, no trem arm.
The trem assembly so far is the only piece "not really correct" to the rest. It's a Pat No. version from 1967.
But it'll work in a pinch. Hope to find a "Pat Pending" one day.

The 1965-1966 Fender Mustang
A couple of things changed in late 1965 to early 1966. The biggest change was the enlargement of the headstock, in line with the BIG HEADSTOCK found on other Fender guitars of the time. The tuners also changed to "F-keys" with sort of square-ish white plastic pegs. The neck plate changes to "F-series" plates. The pickup's base plate changes to gray color. An additional patent number appears on the Headstock. So, to summarize the changes:
Large headstock
F-key tuners with white plastic squarish knobs
F-series neck plate
Single coil pickups with gray base plate
Headstock numbers: DES. 186,826 PAT. 2,960,900 2,741,146 3,143,028 2,817,261 & PAT. PEND.

I swore I remembered seeing a photo somewhere(around 66/67) of (3) swingers...done the same as the old Mustang and MM photos where the red white and daphne are all together.
Did the swinger go by a different name? Was there an "oddity" or "prototype" that ended up "swinger" at the end of the 60's?

Cobbled together in '69 to use up surplus stock; Bass V body with the rear scooped out to lose the through-body string holes, routed for neck pickup and the upper horn cut short; shortscale MM/Duo or Mustang necks carved to a pointy shape (like Series 1 Starcaster by Fender Strats).
Around 200-300 made is the estimate I've heard. You'll see them advertised as '66 or whatever based on the neck date-stamp. Serial number plates are apparently also inconclusive around that era as they were just pulled out of a bin.

The one in his blog...the body was routed to be a Fender V five string bass.
He doesn't say about neck dates.
That thinking goes in line with Fender sales kinda going down the shit in 66/67.
All the strat and tele guys were poo-pooing CBS...so I'm sure Fender saw the merit in aiming to sell lotsa "student model" guitars.
And the smart $$$ has a few models on the cheap, not just one...as they did those years.
They probably would have made a lot of necks and bodies those years...the 24 & 22's for MM, Duos, 'Stangs, bronco, etc.
By 68 with Hendrix well ingrained, the sales came back up again...and Fender could start to mess about with all the 24/22 guitars.
Competition colours...shapes, etcetera, etcetera.
I could see the possible probability of your neck being made in 66. Only 3 years away from 69. Not a lot of time really.
