The Short Scale Acoustic...

... is a horse of another color. I found a Cordoba Cadette in a pawnshop for $90 bucks and bought it. It is a nylon string Spanish guitar and has a 24" scale. I thought it might be fun for Laura Weber/Joan Baez folky stuff. Unfortunately it's kind of dull sounding. I can't find strings that work well on this instrument. What it really needs is a wider neck. I'll keep this guitar but I doubt that it will get much play. But I hanker to try a short scale steel string acoustic if I can find one, maybe something like a Recording King. As a side note, my one objection to the Squire VM series Jaguar is the thinness of the body. I've owned two old Fender Jaguars, one sunburst and one Candy Red, and they had thick bodies, comparable to a strat. They just felt better. By the way, I put a mustang bridge from stewmac on my VM Jaguar and got good results, though the bridge had to be modified just a little. At some point I will detail post some pics of the results and describe what I did to get the bridge radius to conform to the neck radius.

Extra heavy black nylon classical strings, lowered action, and a contact type pickup might make this guitar a lot more interesting and I contemplate doing these things in the near future.

Well, no. It is a classical guitar, afterall. But now that you mention it, some position markers on the fretboard would be useful. I'm just going to do that with PAINT!

can you post pics of the acoustic? i don't know how one would brighten the tone of one since they are so dependent on their build for that, but maybe it might give some clue as to the cause?

The Cordoba acoustic is the last guitar pictured, and the list is already out of date. I have a Sonic Blue Squire VM mustang on order, should arrive next month, and today I purchased an Epiphone Les Paul Jr. from my favorite pawn shop. They wanted $90, I offered $75 "out the door" and they accepted that offer. It is a vintage sunburst, one single coil. It is in great shape but I needed to tighten the neck, lower the action, set intonation, and lower the PU. It plays well and I like having yet another bargain guitar in my little collection. I had a Gibson SG Jr. at one time and didn't want another guitar in that style. Recently I've listened to some old Leslie West stuff on Youtube and decided to get something really simple. The Epiphone Les Paul Jr. seemed like a reasonable option and I knew I would find one in a pawnshop or an eBay.

if you want a steel string acoustic, i can tell you that the gretsch jim dandy is fantastic and super worth the 149 dollar price tag, i have one in the seafoam green finish and its a joy to just strum on when im bored, and i've recorded a couple nice acoustic covers on it of my bloody valentine songs

Two or three people on the board have the Gretsch Jim Dandy now - Noirie, Daftsupernova; it was Robroe's New Year's resolution to buy one (I bet he didn't) - but Doog preferred the Fender CP100 Parlor, small body but standard scale (24⁷/₈" neck).
