I just bought a Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. It needs new strings, but I know nothing about bass strings. What's is the standard gauge for bass strings? Which companies make good strings? Please help me.

I tended to buy Med/Light, 0.34 on top to light gauge D&G, IIRC. I've largely just been getting standard medium lately; DR Black Beauties.

Here's just one viewpoint, a la old toanz

At Moollon, Mr. Park has always sworn by nickel plated steel roundcore DRs for vintagey sounds, a kind of already warm and broken into sound that still lasts forever if you're a finger thumper. Specifically, he used DR Sunbeam 45-105s for years, but recently switched over to DR Pure Blues 45-105s. Kindly note that if you're a strong-handed wanker slapper or really heavy picker, then the roundcore might be prone to twist and warp (causing intonation issues), which is why the modern hexcore is better suited for such tossers that type of playing, though their brightness in general tends to significantly compromise vintagey old thump of nickel-plated roundcore strings.

Refer to audio samples for each on the DR site, as their funky URL kills any kind of hot-linking: http://www.drstrings.com/
