Orange micro terror clean sound

Hi guys ,

I am planning to buy an Orange Micro terror online . I have tried the amp a few month ago in a store pretty far from where I live . I really liked the sound of it

The problem is that I can not remember if it is possible to get a total clean setting on the amp . And then I mean really clean without the slightest bit of crunch like a solid state amp , and also with high output pick ups

So I mean a setting with the gain knob on zero and the volume knob on whatever setting . Is there someone here who ownes the amp and can give me advice on this . There is no music store nearby which got the amp to try out

cheers

Yes you can, set the gain to around 10:30 (or less). The lines are in the same place as clock hours.

You'll get a clean sound even with humbuckers.

Hi guys ,

My tiny terror has arrived . For now I have only tried it out with a headphone because I only have low wattage practice combo ' s and do not have a cabinet yet . What I find dissappointing is that with a clean setting with the gain on 10 o'clock and even lower I get some buzzing break up noise when I hit the strings hard

Does that go away when you play through a cabinet ?

The noise I talk about Is similar to what you hear when this guy plays with a clean setting at 2.46

You didn't really mean that, did you?

My Micro Terror certainly doesn't do that through a cab, but I also don't have the master volume that high. That just seems very loud to me.

I also don't have the original JJ ECC83 in there either, and I don't remember how it was before.

Ok , when I set the master volume on 9 and the gain on 9 the buzzing noise is gone . But through headphones the sound is a bit too soft and dull . Good for your ears though

By the way what kind of replacement tube did you put in your micro terror ?

I must say that the basic sound of this amp is killer . When i put the amp clean or on light crunch and put my effects through it with crunch and lead sounds it really sounds wonderfull . Strange enough when I do that the buzzing noise is gone even when I set the master volume pretty high

I didn't really buy any tubes, I just tried what I had at home.

By the way,the JJ is quite good in other amps, I'm just not crazy about it in the MT.

I liked the Sovtek 12AX7WA the best. Also tried the 12AX7WB, it was not bad. The 12AX7WC and Electro Harmonix 12AX7 were horrible in that amp, in my opinion.

I'm getting some other tubes soon, not particularly for that amp but I'll try them out in it as well.

I just discovered something strange . I connected the headphone out of the Micro terror to my stereo set up and that anoying buzzing sound is not there at all even when I put the master volume at one o clock

And when I connected my headphone to the headphone out the buzzibg sound is there again , that is weird . Could it be that the headphone speakers can not cope with the signal I wonder

Yep... That's you overloading your headphones.

Do your headphones make the buzzing noise at lower volumes?

I guess it could be an earthing issue?

Less but when you hit the strings hard it is still a bit there . It is also strange that it is not there all the time , if you play on, some strokes it is there and then it is gone for some time , really strange

Could this be a tube issue I wonder

I tried it with other headphones as well and also with a passive speaker set meant to connect directly to a headphone out and I get the same trouble

if it works with a cab ok, than the amp is ok, maybe a bad cap somewhere in the headphone out cirquit?

I am gonna test it with a cabinet in a few days , it could be the headphone out that is no good still it is strange that the buzzing noise is not there when connecting the headphone out to my stereo system

There probably is a store not to far from where I live that has one for testing , so if that is the case I think I am gonna test the one they have

By the way I am pretty sure it is not an earthing problem . I have used it connected to an earthed power socket

I have tested it on a Peavey 2 x 12 inch speaker cab . The buzzing noise I had via the headphone out is not there , instead of that you get a little egde which sounds pretty good

If you want a sound that is completely clean on a cabinet playing with humbuckers you should set the gain at nine or lower but the sound is not as powerfull when set on 10 for instance , alltogether a good amp with a great sound

To be sure my model is not as good as the other models I am trying to find someone who got this amp as well , so I can compare my model to another model and hear if there is any difference

What do you have in there? Is it a JJ ECC83?

Also, does it seem super loud to you? Mine has a weird taper on the master volume, maybe they all do, but the amp on 2 seems louder than an all valve 50 watter on 4 (yes, I've actually tried this). It's not like I don't like the amp, but kind of defeats its purpose as a practice amp because you can't play it at night without bothering others even at one (the first notch), and it just goes straight from barely audible to loud.

Whether it is loud in my case really depends on the setting of the gain . When the gain is lower than ten the amp iisn 't that loud

However I must say that it really mixes well with my effects , so I am gonna keep the amp anyhow . Even through the headphones it sounds really marvelous when I run my crunch and lead sounds coming from my Boss ME 5 floor processor

O.k., I've tried other valves:

Sovtek 12AX7LPS : very loud, I switched it without moving the volume control (I turned off the amp, of course), and in the same position it was louder. Also has a grainier distortion with the gain knob maxed out. Really I'm not sure I'll keep this in as I prefer distortion from pedals, but I don't dislike it.

JJ ECC82 (12AU7) and ECC81 (12AT7) : these provide much less gain and volume. They are ideal for home practice, because the master volume on 4 or 5 is equal to 1 or so with a 12AX7, so it's easier to dial in lower volume tones. The ECC82 is lowest in volume and gain. They also provide less distortion when the gain knob is on maximum. Would not use this with a drummer.

Tried the JJ ECC803, it may be the best one yet.

It's supposed to have less gain than the ECC83, but it might possibly have more than the Sovtek 12AX7WA and WB, in any case the reason I like it is it gives a really cool distortion when you use pedals.

edit!!!: figures I got completely false information from the internet, including dealers' pages.

The ECC803S is actually the high gain version, The ECC83S seems to be the normal gain version. I tried replacing the 803 with an 83 and the volume dropped considerably. Not only that, but the 803 distorted at settings that other valves did not. Plus it has a longer plate, which also seems to indicate higher gain.

Interesting information . I may try other valves onde day . For the time being I am pretty pleased with it . I have the small 8 '' Orange Cabinet at the moment but I can still swap it with another cabinet

Playing through the cabinet the buzzing noise is not there and I must say that the not only the crunch but also the cleans are very good . I am glad that I have bought this amp I really do

Does anyone here have experience with the Kustom defender 1 x 12 '' cabinet ?
