Me neither but Wikipedia did:
The original issue Bass VI had three Stratocaster-style single coil pickups (although the internal construction was more similar to the Telecaster's bridge pickup with its metal base and mounting screws), which were mounted in special chrome rings and were controlled by a panel of three on/off slider switches rather than the conventional three-position switch.

looks really junky. good thing they ditched them.

also found out strat pickups were originally going to have base plates like a tele, on all 3 pickups. thought that was cool.

Was the mute removed in 65?

I think they stopped shipping with the mute, and moved to using Jaguar/Jazzmaster bridges, which aren't as wide, making intonation more difficult. Saved them money, though.

Interesting. So did they first change the saddles, then bridge and finally the mute was left over?

i didn't realize the 61 had a 3 slider, and those pickups are really odd looking for a fender of that era... really odd.

Poking around, they moved from
.: 1961 - no high-pass filter, weird ass pickups with chrome surrounds
.: 1962 - add high-pass filter, Jaguar pickups
.: 1964 - threaded saddles to single channel barrel saddles
.: 1972ish, maybe 1974 - Jaguar bridges and stopped shipping with a mute
