The website says “first three strings of a six string so I assume they mean E A D

Looks like they mean GBE:
Loog FAQs wrote:How do you tune a Loog Guitar?
Quick answer: GBE, from low to high.
Loog Guitars use the same first three strings -and tuning- of a six-string guitar.

Slap some heavy gauge strings on, tune it down real low and you can do Presidents of the USA covers!

I don't think they're going to come to your house and confiscate your instrument if you tune it wrong.
By the way, balalaika is EEA, like a guitar but thinner unwound strings, so you can play power chords or add a major or minor 3rd with your pinky.

Or just tune it to be whatever you want?
DGB or equivalent would be neato for translating guitar open chords
