How shall I wire my 2x12?

I've just bought an empty 2x12 cab. I need it to total 8Ohms impedence.

Is there any difference in sound between series and parallel wiring for the speakers?

Anyone know any good FAQs about this sort of thing?

Somehow I think the answer is, depends on who you are.

I found a couple a while back.

Anyway you should get two 16 ohm speakers and wire them in parallel. You could add another jack and wiring to have them as 16 ohm each if you want to use both as stereo but that's another story.

Get two 16 ohm speakers and connect both pos terminals to the tip and both neg terminals to the sleeve.

This shows you the Mono/Stereo stuff which is a little more complicated but useful - my 1936 Marshall cabinet is wired this way:

Brilliant! That's exactly what I needed to know.

I think I'll whack a couple of Celestion G12Ts in there and see how it sounds. My cab is open, so once they're in I might mess about with making it closed-back for a bit of bassiness.

Is that an Avatar Cabinet? Looks spiffy.

And definitely close-back that mother if you're losing the low end.

I got it on ebay from these guys:

Looks very nice quality. I just want something that'll fill-out the sound my Musicman 112 makes. This might do the job even with a open-back.

Cool - their speakers are overpriced (check out wafordvalves.co.uk), how much did you get the 2x12" shell for?

A bloody fortune (?150) but I rationalised it as being cheaper than on their site.

Am quite aware that I coulda got a Marshall 1936 cab for like ?100, but this fender jobby is a bit more slimline to fit in the volvo.

I don't think you could get a marshall 1936 for that much, I watched them go for ?160-?180 in beat up second hand condition on ebay for months.

I ended up buying one new because after shipping it was only ?20 more as I found a place selling them for ?215.

Ah, one more thing. What wattage should my speakers be?

My amp is a 100w hybrid. It's got a 1x12" in there already. For this extension cab, am I right in thinking I should whack two 30w speakers in there so they get driven properly?

I'd personally not risk popping a speaker live for the sake of a little breakup and would just buy a pair of 50 watters.

Hmmm. I can't find a suitable 50 speaker. Would 75 Watts be too much?

Nah. I run my 50w head into a 150w cab (2 x 75w speakaz) and it sounds grrrrrreat, like Frosties.

i didnt know that using an extension cab changed the wattage going to each speaker out?
