Our sometimes drummer is soon to become our never drummer, which means that I can't babysit/play/record his kit anymore.

A couple of us are probably going to split the cost of a set rather than revert to Yamaha pads again. Craigslist, whatever.

Any recommendations for drums/hardware? I mean, I recognize lots of the big names like Ludwig, Yamaha, Tama, Pearl, Rogers, etc. But given what we're likely to find for <600 USD used, are any brands especially good -- or especially worth avoiding? Thanks.

i still like the sound of a nice gretsch kit more, any gretsch, actually..i always feel that they sound more aggressive/less sterile than ludwigs

i'm a sucker for vintage drumkits tho, old DW's, Rogers, slingerlands too, champagne finishes, real low setups, the 'less is more' thing

pearl makes great kits and they're very affordable.. but they're all around...

Yamaha makes really good kits, even the cheaper ones are nicer than most anything else in the price range.

Most drum kits, including lower end setups, can sound good with decent, properly tuned skins.

Well someone is certainly a long time lurker, small time poster.

he may only have 41 posts but filtercap is a legend in my eyes. He knows how to insert a bias pot into a Fender twin.

Keep your eyes out for older kits, don't buy new unless you got the $$$ for the real wood. Older ludwig will be expensive but very good.

Most of the old drums were made from real wood and not plywood like some 70's and 80's shit ones that some companies like slingerland when they sold the company and the new buyer did to a legend and ruined the companies name. Just find a good used set thats made nice and put good heads on it and you'll be good to go. but most important is to tune them.

I used to have a tama rockstar set. I've seen alot of people use these kits. For the price they sound good.

Your not going to get that "DW" fusion drummer tone/overtone sound but the kit wont break your wallet either.

Didn't Grohl use a Rockstar kit?

anyway i have a gretsch kit readilly at my access, they're really nice kits, and have a beast of a kick drum (26").

A lot of the Gretsch kits are quite nice, and some are quite affordable. Meanwhile, if you can happen to find a vintage Slingerland/Rogers/Silvertone/Ludwig set, jump on them... fast!

But, as Andy said, most sets can sound quite decent as long as you set them up and tune them well. As long as you're not looking for a completely amazing sound, you should be pretty okay.

This is a mid-60's Rogers kit I'm saying goodbye to. Our potential future sometimes drummer (PFSD) had an even cooler Rogers that I had an opportunity to play at his place. Turns out that belongs to a buddy of his who's also coming to collect it.

A nice-looking Gretsch set slipped past on Craigslist a while ago, but we won't be able to make the Big Drum Decision for a couple weeks yet at least.

See-thru Ludwigs will have to wait till we find enough of those Rickenbacker Lightshow guitars and a lucite Armstrong bass. I see lots of new "starter" - grade Ludwig kits out there tho. Decent? Crap? Decent crap?

I can't find any price info on Dee & Dee -- I mean C & C drums. Have deez -- er -- these been showing up on the used market??
