Rock School 101

I have never had a lot of pedals, and those I had, I recently sold. Right now I have a Vamp just to eff around on. It's all I really need for the NOTHING I do. I see that you guys string together your own selection, prolly because there's nothing like the real deal, and no single unit can have the best of everything. So what are some essential boxes that everyone should have, regardless of style? Let's say a tube screamer, some kind of distortion, wah, what?

Name your dream combo and cheap alternates if applicable. If there's already an old thread deep down in the smelly basement, I apologize. This is a useful discussion to compare results.

Well basically most pedal setups go something like this:

(Wah if needed)
|
Overdrive/Distortion
|
Equalization
|
Modulation (chorus/flanger/phaser)
|
Time based (delay/reverb)

Something from each of those camps will give you something to play with - I can give you some recommendations from my experience with buying, selling, playing, owning and loving but first I need to knwo what style of music you like playing and what your budget is.

These threads are fun.

I'm not really a big pedal head, but I think it has more to do with what you pick up and have managed to make use of, and worked in to your sound.

I think the most useful pedal I have is an old Marshall Guv'nor, that I took off a bassist friend a few years back. I still haven't payed him...

I don't consider anyone my friend who puts Modulation before Delay.

I recommend:

Guitar --- Overdrive --- Distortion or Fuzz --- Delay --- Modulation --- Amp

Anything else is just icing on the cake, whereas that's the bread and butter.

Here's my setup summed:

Guitar --- Bypass Loop Pedal --- Amp

Loop 1: Overdrive --- Fuzz --- Fuzz
Loop 2: Tremolo --- Digital Delay --- Digital Chorus --- Analog Delay --- Analog Chorus/Flange

Modulation before a delay can give some interesting results, especially with something like a flanger and a longish delay- hearing the same "swoosh" on a repeated bit can be pretty fun.

+1 i always rock my dem before my dmm, it gives me a really awesome choppy swoosh. Of coarse i have my dmm set to a really long delay, and as much feedback as it'll go before it starts to distort.

My dream setup, well, that's a bit long, and i'm not sur ehow i would arrange them, but here are the ones I can think of right now:

Bad MOnkey, Blue Box, Truly Beautiful Disaster, Whammy, Behringer VD (or a muff that sounds better, if there is one I haven't heard it) hand made bit rate reducer (in the works from your friends at Dwarfcraft) RIng modulator, EHX POG, RIng MOd, Crybaby, A delay identical to the DMM except you can play htrough it without the goddamn signal overedriving, Line 6 DL4, Boss RC-50 humongous loopstation.
