Hello... I have a tweed Peavey classic 50 that I picked up used for cheap. It has one problem, it has absolutely no bass repsonse. With the bass dial dimed, it sounds like my other amps with the bass at the lower end. Just no depth or thickness. BUT.... When I unplug it and run it through my AVATAR cabinet, it sounds 200% better. Now, I know the original owner replaced one of the speakers with a Carvin Speaker (WHY??) and am not sure if the speakers just suck, or maybe he wired them incorrectly. ANy suggestions to troubleshoot.

Possibly a faulty speaker? I don't know how you can wire a speaker to affect the tone, except for using some kind of crossover (which split high/low frequencies to different speakers in a PA/hifi speaker cabinet).

I'm not too clued up, but could it be wired the wrong way around?

A single speaker can be wired either way.

it is a 2x12 setup, with one original speaker, and 1 carvin replacement speaker.

Ah right, my mistake.

Sounds like a phasing issue. Switch the connections round on one speaker.

I was only guessing. I had it in my mind the Peavey Classic 50 was a 2x12 or a 1x15.

I think you guys have nailed this one. The speakers are probably out of phase, and hence you're getting that phasey thin sound. So switch the polarity of the wires on one speaker and see how that sounds?

Is the cab open back? You're gonna get a little less bass but it shouldn't be ridiculous.

The cab is open back, but so is my avatar....

Switching the speaker polarity helped. I still don;t like the sound of the speakers as well as the Avatar cabinet, but the bass is alot fuller.

Peaveys tend to drive the hell out of their valves. Seen so many Classic 30s whistling and sounding weedy. Get a nice balanced/matched set of valves in there (I favour JJs personally) and let it roll.

In the end it was kind of a mute point as I sold the amp today. With the super reverb, tiny terror and crate powerblock I am covered for about anything. Hell, if neccessary, I have tube gear in my PA rack that I could run a guitar into (and do often for my acoustic)

Classic 50's are 2x12s, it's the Delta Blues (30 Watts) that has the 15 inch, and can also have 2x10s.

Shite speakers generally are weakest in bass response.

I was considering replacing the Blue Marvel Peavey speaker in my Classic before I even got it. But I realised it's not actually that bad, even in comparison to my friends who's replaced hers with a Celestion.

Those aren't bad speakers, I was thinking the Celestion GoldBack stock speaker in my DSL401 - very brittle.

you're better off w/o that peavey, mickie. i never really liked the tone out of it, either, and you've got waaaaaaay better shit in your arsenal these days. the super is a madman.

I agree. I picked it up for like $200 used as a backup for the super. I never really intended to use it for anything really. Now that I got THE TERROR...... All is good..... I actually find myself playing the orange more than the super alot of times.
