easter goodness

Post by kim »

i've been spending too much money on gear lately, well, always, guess it's alright being broke but having a new toy

so i kind of made up my mind; no new chorus, sticking with the ceb for now, no phasorr, sticking with the dano, odb is out, big muff will be out until i have my clean blend box

in comes...sansamp programmable bass driver... i so want this thing
so i'm just gonna go ahead and order one

i think it'll be perfect for our heavy/exsplosive/metal-ish parts or bass solos, thinking tool, nomeansno, meshuggah, slint etc

just fat, throbbing bass with enough clarity and a little bit of overdrive on top of it....
it's like a three-in-one pedal so i hope this one will last..i'm tired of messing with overdrives that suck dynamics and clarity/volume, people tell me it gives you a tube (svt) like overdrive, distortion or clean boost

i know it's a bass pedal; but do you know someone who has one, heard one live or something like that ?

there's so many bass players who have one of these yet it's so hard to find sound samples....

i need to know wether it's really worth being broke again

Always thinking of our fat-stringed brethren, we had to make a 3-channel, programmable, rig-in-a-box for bassists who can’t get enough of a great thing. Like the TRI-A.C. for guitar, you get three hot tones right at your toetips. The all-analog circuitry features the same controls as its single channel predecessor: Drive, Bass, Treble, Presence, Blend and Level. Digital only in its programmability, you just tweak the knobs until you find a tone, double-tap on a footswitch, and it’s saved in that channel. It’s that simple. Three of your faves -- to go!
  • * Build your Bass Driver DI into a live rig with a Bass Power Engine 60, and run through the PA for extra power.
    * Boldly go live with just your Bass Driver DI straight into the PA.
    * Bounce into any studio with a Programmable Bass Driver DI and plug directly into the board.
    * While larger than our other SansAmp pedals, the Programmable Bass Driver DI still fits into a gig bag. Actual size is 7.25L x 5W x 2H.
    * Even with its roadworthy all-metal construction, each unit weighs in at a mere 25oz.
    * Operable with a 9V alkaline battery or optional Tech 21 DC2 power supply, and it is also phantom powerable.

Original Bass Driver:
  • * PRESENCE controls the amount of definition and upper harmonic content.
    * DRIVE adjusts the overall gain structure and overdrive.
    * LEVEL regulates the XLR and effected 1/4" output levels.
    * BLEND allows you to mix the direct bass signal with SansAmp Tube Amplifier Emulation circuitry (which is particularly useful for basses equipped with piezo pickups).
    * BASS & TREBLE are active EQ controls, specifically tuned for bass guitar, that cut or boost +/- 12dB.

Right off the Bat that looks extremely impressive and I think you'll be very happy with it, the Reviews on HC look very positive and Tech21 have a very good reputation. I say go for it - stuff is better than waking up hungover and wodnering where the money went. Plus I want samples and pics ;)

it's pricey for a student, but then again, it's three pedals for just a tiny bit more than the non-programmable...

it kind of simulates a toob amp (svt-ish) so that's nice too since i'm using a solid state top, if only i could get rid of my lefty epi ..that would cover the cost
and if i really like its sound the DI on it will make it possible for me to leave out the nasty behringer boxes everyone's forcing me to use..even when my bass head has a built in DI :x

the reviews of this thing convinced me that i'm missing out on something..next gig is ..hm..end of april... would be fun to have it by then..

i'm so spoiled

I feel that way sometimes too until I realise how hard I rock and how it would be depriving other people of that good stuff to not just DO IT

The guitar amp version with does a British/California/HiGain simulation is mean to be pretty hot too. I'd say goo with it.

i'm going to order one next week, should have it by..mid april or something,
it's irritating to stay away from the odb or big muff at gigs because they both ruin your midrange&treble and the PA guy starts nagging about the noise

at the bassforum there's all these 'i hate PA-people' threads, hehe, it's like that when yo play at bars that usually have punk and simple metalbands (nothing against those), they send your bass signal through a shitty DI, so you're lucky when it's a small club and your amp has enough wattage to make the PA guy realise there shouldn't be any bass coming through the PA system, otherwise the people in front of the PA speakers will get a crap-a-lised quiet bass sound...pretty frustrating

so hopefully i'll be able to use this one as my own DI box at gigs, if i like its sound

one thing i'm not sure about is this; if i use its built in DI and i still have modulating fx like a chorus or phaser after the sansamp..they won't be coming through the DI ? so should i put the sansamp at the end of my fx chain if i want to use it as a DI ?

prolly a stupid question, i'm not sober right now either :?

Short answer yes.

I'm surprised your bass amp doesn't have a DI out? It's an Ashdown isn't it? Or is it an Ampeg. I can't remember.

Most proper Ashdowns have DIs outs I know that.

When ever I set up a bass for live session recordings or club gigs I usually DI the bass with a semi decent box. Its more to do with convenience than anything else.

I think it's more about getting a realistic grinding slightly OD'd bass sound, something I've yet to hear from a bass amp DI output.

at larger venues/bars i like having a mic in front of the cab ànd a DI

but when there's no mic for the bass cab..haha,
well indeed, the ashdown does have a DI -out but here's what most 'PA' people do/say :

me: if you want to DI the bass amp; it's got a built in DI
PA: ah, yes, i see, is it a good DI ? (holding a Behringer DI-box)
me: i'm pretty sure it is yes
PA: *puts the xlr into the DI out of the bass top ...into the Behringer DI...*
me: *thinking*..i'm not going to argue..fuck it*thinking*

after the gig:

PA guy: the DI on your bas top was good
me: *thinking* fuck you *thinking*

it's gotta be a boxxxx ! or else it ain't a 'proper DI' ..heh..
i'm tired of arguing with people like that, they approach me with a cheap DI box, i approach them with a (hopefully) better DI box, end of story

but that's another story, to me, getting the sansamp is about having the option to fatten up my clean sound and adding some overdrive from time to time, not to convince the soundguy/girl of the quality of my gear

it's not that they're all assholes, i've met some great sound guys/girls too, people who really knew what they were doing and who listen to you and really 'get' what kind of sound you want, but honestly..most of them don't..they're like people who want to be 'part of it' but can't play or sing so they just 'do the sound' ..i know it's cruel to say that, they're not all like that..but a lot of them are.. but .;yeah.;i'm nagging..and semi-drunk
