My point was that the Supersonic was meant to be a more accessible way for somebody to buy into the whole "alternative", shortscale Jag/Mustang scene without shelling out for a full-price Fender. And it was made by a budget company. That's a debatable point considering some of the absolute gems and mid-priced guitars they've put out, but they are still a budget company. And I don't see anything wrong with guitars aimed at kids. Where was the main appeal going to lie in guitars meant to evoke the grunge/alt-rock scene of that era? 45 yr old blues lawyers?

Think about the options available in the mid to late 90s when it came to buying into the alt-rock crowd; it was a bit pants. This was when I started playing guitar and I wanted a Jaguar from day one. My options were buying a brand new Japanese version, or a second-hand one from Loot. Then Squier brought out the Supersonic, the Jagmaster, the Venus. It was a Big Fucking Deal.

I have a Squier CV 50's BSB Tele, and it plays and sounds just as good, if not better than the AVRI 50's Tele's I played at the store the same day. A name's a name, shouldn't say much about the guitar itself. If a guitar's good, it's good. If it sucks, it sucks.

Word. My best guitar (and it's not even close) right now is a Squier Deluxe Stratocaster. I changed pickups because naturally, I wanted my most versatile pickups in my favorite guitar so I can play it all the time. It definitely plays as nice as any Fender I've ever owned/played. I'll play my Squier Deluxe above either of my two guitars that say Fender on the headstock because it's a better guitar.

you are just plain wrong. a super sonic was 650 and a mustang was 700.

Dunno about you, but $50 was a pretty big deal when I started playing guitar (~1994ish)... and could make all the difference in affordability.

To build on this, in the last few years, has there ever been an entire line of Fenders that disappointed?

I mean, the one Blacktop Jag I had was terrible, but even that might have been user error on the previous owner's part. By the time I was done with that guitar, it played very well.

When I started buying my own stuff around 2000 all those Vista series were around $200-400 and that includes Jagmasters, The Venus, and Super Sonics. The Squier Duo-sonics were routinely found for $99-150. I bought a fender Toronado and a Fender Jagstang for $250 each. Hell I remember I could have bought a LPB Comp Mustang for $850 and I thought that was crazy.

This board is filled with Fender homers, the idea that anybody around here is too hard on FMIC is a joke. This board is pretty much in a Fender headlock, 4 serious.

Just saw this page up on Musician's friend. They haven't posted individual pages for each guitar, but this page does show the price for all of them, and they actually seem to be priced pretty fairly. I don't understand the huge price differences between the 3 basses but the guitars all seem to be priced really well. Of course the only bass I'd be interested in is the most expensive one. The Marauder is only $399 which seems pretty awesome. Especially when Guitar Center sends out these 15% off cards all the time, You could get one for only $340!

son of a bitch, I was torn between ordering one of those teles and making it a tele plus or the new J Masics jazzmaster, now I'll have to give it A LOT more thought.

My favorite of the guitars is the Tele Plus by far. It should be pretty good on its own, but more than that, it is THE ideal modding platform for Jonny Greenwood Tele, since it has the bridge humbucker (with the metal frame around it), what I would assume is a swimming pool route, 22-fret maple board, and the little toggle switch in the control plate.

All you need is a Strat-pickup pickguard, and a pair of Lace Sensors. This would cost, what, all of $150?

That said, I would never use the Red-Red and Blue, I would probably use Red-Blue and Silver.

Besides that, im not snobby about this but at that time the Musicmasters, Duo's, Stangs, etc were made in the same USA factories with the same timber as the now sought after astronomically priced Strats and Tele's. These new ones are'nt. Its not the same by a long way and their comparison is misleading. I'd like to see a new Fender USA at around £360 made with the same woods as the standard Strats, Teles, etc but that is never going to happen and we all know it.

I don't know, Fran, can you honestly say that blindfolded, you can tell the difference between a Squier Standard, a Fender Standard, and a Fender American Strat?

(Other than the Mexican one has 21 frets and a vintage style bridge)

Or better, can you tell the difference between a Classic Series 60s MIM Strat, a Japanese 60s RI Strat, and an American 60s RI Strat? I really can't.

Yes, you could. Squier has a the non-glossy, matte finish necks. The MIM has different saddles, and honestly my MIM strat has a much different feeling neck than my MIA strat. Not that it's bad, but it doesn't feel the same at all.

Now your comparison of the MIJ, MIM and MIA 60's strats, is a much more valid arguement. Those are all likely to feel pretty similar.
