My dad turns pens on out of wood and horns all the time. I was thinking of having him turn some interesting knobs out of swirled plastic. I'm sure he'd be willing to give a crack at it.

Maybe not. You'd have to talk to a Rock guy. Bone, and horn is do-able.

does anyone remember tha guitar i built for a fellow named chip?
i made some knobs of cow bone for him, rathe tricky, they looked cool, and turned out pretty cool as well.

It will be loosely based on this:



The body will probably be a 50s/60s Mercedes-Benz pale blue/grey colour, with some relicing to go along with the vintage neck that I am using.



Oh, this was the original design with the coprolite (which would have been pieced together in four sections over wood):



With the coprolite, the body would have been a bit less dull in colour. Ignore the knobs -- I was going to make knobs out of small crystal or silver crowns from old perfume bottles. I only ended up finding one, though.

Holy crap that's beeeyootiful. Do coprolites look this good, too? It would make an awesome pickuard, but I imagine it would probably need some sort of sheet metal backing glued to it to prevent it from accidentally shattering.

It would probably also look good as a laminated top on a bound body. But I imagine that a piece that big would probably cost a fortune.

Yes, coprolite can look that good as well. Both of them really varies from dull patterns to out of this world bold patterns.

And yes, they are fairly common and easy to obtain. Check eBay for good deals. Large pieces of coprolite are hard to find, though -- you would have to section the coprolite together like the picture I made above of the guitar.

I was going to layer the coprolite over wood. The main cost of having it made was going to be drilling holes for the pickguard screws, in which they would have had to have been large enough so the screws go directly down to the wood rather than making contact with the coprolite to avoid shattering it. I would still like to attempt this in the future when my budget allows for it.

What did you use to cut and drill the bones with? Surgical bits and blades or normal ones?

when i made the knobs i used a drill press and some heavey duty rasps, nothing more than that really, besides some hand work.

NoHo made the pickguard, I am painting it.
