I also have a ZVex SHO pedal that I thought was the "end-all, be-all" for that boost and it has now been replaced on my pedalboard with John's "Clean Boost" and collecting dust.

I gave this pedal all "10s" because you can buy the others for about 15-20 cheaper but you will miss out on the best tone and craftsmanship around. John Landgraff's pedals and amps are the best kept secrets out there but will not be for long.

I suppose he's quite clever really. There must be a hell of a lot of people in America who take the god thing seriously enough to buy some extra hype around his pedals because of it.

On the pedal building front I'm putting an order through for a bulkload of parts and I'll pick up a breadboard from Maplin or somewhere else in the week sometime. I'll freely admit that a lot of my reason for wanting to do it is that I tried once before and i didn't work out.

300 resistors
200 Ceramic caps
100 Electrolytic caps
100 Mylar caps
100 transistors (most of which I probably wont use but they're cheap)
100 diodes
10 pots (values I picked based on some designs I was interested in copying)
1 IC socket (to cut up for transistor sockets)
6 LEDs (I could have got more but I figured I'd get some ultrabright blue transparent bass boost technology)

After considering what you can get from Maplin and the like for similar money, that's a pretty awesome deal if you ask me.

Maplin is crap for everything but topping up one or two parts you're missing.

Mylar Caps, you're already going Mojohound on me. Diodes are invaluable, Transistors you'll need npns, pnps, JFETs and MOSFETs.

What are transistor sockets for? I got some with my chunky cheese but didn't end up using them and just soldered the transistor straight to the PCB.

I'd be interested what the pots are like, for that price I would expect they'll be the plastic shafts you have to snip down. Alpha's are pricey (but worth it in my opinion). In my experience 1M and 100K pots are very useful, the rest of the values seem to be spread among designs, I always keep stock of 5K,10K,50K,250K,500K in addition to the 1Ms and 100Ks.

You're ok with that if you don't overheat the transistor. Sockets are to decouple them from the soldering process, and also so you can experiment with different values.

I got a few of those, then some pots ($0.55 each!) and a few loose LEDs just because shipping is $4 for up to $29 worth of parts and I was at about $27.50.

I got one of these as the IC socket, It looks like it should cut up easy enough, although what you posted looks better.



They ship internationally, and you can pay by paypal or Visa/Mastercard/Amercian Express. If you want to pay by paypal you have to email them your order details first and they get back to you. I emailed them at 4:15am, the reply came at 4:55am. Can't say fairer than that for a speedy response.

I'm likely to buy some alpha pots or whatever for stuff I actually assemble, but having a few values handy can't be a bad thing. Not for 25p each anyway.

The value packs came recommended from one of the more long-term seeming guys at freestompboxes.org (can't remember the name) so I'm assuming the quality is reasonable at least. Futurlec say they're based in asia somewhere to be close to their suppliers, so I imagine it's just the same parts almost everywhere else sells without a lot of the markup because they're shipping from near the source.

I just ordered a whackload of shit, I was getting low on some resistor values and capacitors.

PROTIP: decode and write the resistor values on the paper strips that holds them together James. 20 mins work - a lifetime of simplicity for builds.

small bear has em for 10 bucks. yeouch... I've found this place that has em for 4.50, but I don't know how reliable their product or service is. hmmmm..
