Any idea on what exactly happened here? First transaction was obviously bullshit, but why?

I actually sent him an email right after he bought it asking if he did in fact just buy the guitar for $40. He said yes and now that he knows what they go for, he would probably sell it. He asked how I knew, and I said i just looked at the feedback. Strange thing is that both he and the original seller(if there was one) both left feedback within two days. I don't leave feedback until I get the item. Another funny thing is that this guy just bought a black les paul from a seller and the les paul was the first and only sale he had just like the seller of the SS. Coincidence? maybe. Feedback padding? maybe.

With Ebay's commission, wouldn't it just be cheaper to buy some ridiculously cheap item to pad your feedback?

they probably just cancelled the transaction after leaving feedback. ebay lets you do that.
