Rocksmith arrived today, and I got enough time to play it for an hour or so. Very, very similar to Guitar Hero/Rockband, except of course for the real guitar. I have been a little frustrated with how it tells you which notes to play, but it is simple and I'm sure I will get used to it and get over this hurdle. I like how it adds notes when it sees you are comfortable playing a song, but sometimes it's difficult with songs you already can play, and it's giving you a simplified version of the riff. I also found it hard when it suddenly decided that I was good enough to play some lead, and it suddenly threw some fast notes at me higher up the neck. Again, I think once I get more used to the interface of how it tells me to play the notes, this will be less of an issue.
So far I have played around 9 songs maybe, and I think the worst I've scored was 66%. That was with a song I had never even heard before. Best I've scored is around 95%, but that was with a particularly simplified version of a song I knew quite well. The songs are good in my opinion, and so far, a nice range.
So ultimately I'm enjoying it, but it still has a fair amount of novelty value. It hasn't yet taught me anything I couldn't have learned from listening to and working out, or getting tabs for. It has currently got my attention by wanting to get the a higher score, and 'unlock' all the notes for the song which I see as a good thing. When notes are missed from riffs that I already know how to play, then my timing goes all to pot and I lose points which is frustrating. It's getting the thumbs up as it's fun, but for now. Maybe ask me again in a couple of weeks once the novelty wears off. As for a tool to improve on guitar, well it's got me practicing. I doubt it will teach me anything I don't know, or couldn't have worked out.
