only if you clip them short in the first place. if there's a bit of excess string to grab hold of you shouldn't have a problem. honestly, i don't care how it looks. sometimes i clip them. sometimes i don't.

tech or no tech, the guitar rory gallagher is playing in the photo has slotted pegs, so was probably strung up using a method similar to the one i suggested, and mike baulked at.

if you want a more 'real life' example, my friend ben, at the astoria. definitely no techs on hand, and i'll be damned if i ever saw him with a pair of wire cutters. one of the most experienced players i know.

haha. . . always have a spare, too. my rule of thumb was if i broke a string on stage during warm-up, i'd change the string. if it was during the show, i'd switch guitars. but having my little bag there with me meant that those tools were available to the band, too, and that came in handy for them on more than one occasion.

I did the stab-yrself-in-the-eyeballs uncut string thing too. When I was fucking 13.

just pull on the string to keep tension while you wind it. that's the only way to get clean wraps. The coin trick is completly unecessary and kinda pointless.

On a funny/enfuriating note. my brother was taking off the strings of my 66 mustang, so he could take it apart and make a tracing while I wasn't home. he thought the slots on my original white button f tuners where for a screwdriver so you could loosen the tuners fast. he proceeded to break the slot off of the original 66 white button tuner. Luckily he very quickly bought the first single tuner that came up on eBay, so I agreed not to kill him and all of his friends, and take his bassman 10.

I don't understand the allen key one. Surely that's only for truss rod adjustments. I could understand it for a tour but not for a gig. I'm probably missing something here though.

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrob9 - just pack the damn wire cutters. It's good show to be prepared. And cut the excess string - it's only cool looking until you catch yourself or a bandmate in the eye. It's certainly not cool when it tears the fuck out of your case's insides.

My bag: Screwdriver, allen wrenches, needlenose and flatnose pliers, extra strings for myself as well as in other gauges for other people, string winder/cutter, duct tape, masking tape, at least 3 cables in various lengths, 9v batteries, 9v DC wall wart, 3-prong extension cord.

Overkill? YES; but I consider it absolutely necessary.

Its worth taking into consideration other factors here. I dont know how old that rrob69 guy is but some people on here are very young, they cant afford a second guitar and they dont have a clue what wire cutters are. If Dad dont have a pair kicking around the garage at that moment it becomes forgotten within minutes.
Even experienced players too, you get in from work then throw your gear in the boot, drive 50 miles to play a gig then realise you left your allen keys at home because you was fixing up your kids toy the previous night. Or the cutters are in the Strat case but you took your Jag instead, a string is broke so you wind it up near the machine head.
I dont get why its such an issue with people, maybe the other guy 'Armsock Bronco' is a n00b on guitar? I dunno, he just asked a simple question.

James.. an allen key is usefull if you use a Floyd Rose or you did'nt set your Jag up right.
To be fair, if you take a spare guitar you shoul'nt need any tools on a one night gig. Maybe we can fit a soldering iron, multi meter and some spare caps in our gig bags too!
