I think maybe the base coat on these is red, so you get a bit of a purple flav from the blue sparkle.

My 66 was 1 1/2" thick.
The red is most likely Dakota Red. Many Fender Custom Colors are often painted over stock colors. Some times they were not even clear coated. never heard of Fender outsourcing finishes before. I can understand though, you need a larger needle on your gun to spray flakes like that, and steady hand (to lite, it's ruff... to heavy, it all lays down flat).
ASH (adam) from the JS board, years ago told me... candy colors are transparent colors sprayed over a silver base color.

in the goldern years book there was mention about fender using the car paint shops for the special paint jobs like the flake finishes. given the costs and the way they were sold (through reps) it was the equivalent of the custom shop I guess

Believe all the colors they used were car colors. ReRanch.com tells you where each color came from, Ice Blue - Corvette...
